When the lockdown was imposed, most of us were confused.  I was confused.  It really was a half-assed plan to lockdown the capital.  But instead of using the word lockdown, they opted for a rather 'friendlier' word - I would have wished that they just written down a plan, studied it carefully and then announce it to the public.  But what happened was that - they just decided 'Hey! Let's do this and let's just play it by ear'  When the setting is friends getting together or organizing a trip - that is quite alright, but when it's a country, the Philippines you are handling - well, it's a different ballgame altogether.

I have been silent for a while really, because I wanted to give this administration a chance.  But this administration has been falling short of every low expectation that I put out.  They have constantly gave out excuses instead of solutions.  The president of the country has been absent in the important instances the country has faced.  It makes me really wonder, is the president truly alive and well?  He has his spokesman, Mr. Sap Sap, who ran for the sanate and won (I didn't vote for him and I will NEVER vote for him) and yet - he just added being a Philippine Senator to his job description.  He  is still by the president's side.  Anyway, with the new rules of the lock down - well, I was left with nothing to do really.

So when a fellow mom in my XS Kinder group brought up the idea of making face shields, I took it as a sign and grabbed the opportunity to make myself productive.  I knew the government won't step up and we the citizens need to do our part (since we have a shitty government).  It was the only kind of contribution that I can do and involve myself with.  So I volunteered together with other Xavier School moms, we didn't know one another - but we bonded over making these face shield.  Charms was our leader and we let her lead, we listened, we sourced, we pooled connections and we worked.  We worked hard, some of us sourced materials, while some coordinated with hospitals that needed the face shield, most of us were assemblers like me.  The bottomline was - WE ALL WORKED AS ONE TEAM.  We put our efforts together because we wanted to help our medical frontliners.  We need to survive this pandemic.  We need to help these medical frontliners because without them, who will take care of us?

I am a proud member of the Xavier School Face Shield Group!  Our group has made over 17,000 pieces of face shield and distributed to so many hospitals in the metro.

My uncle passed away because of COVID-19.
It's serious.  
I never thought someone I personally know and a blood relative would be one of the casualties.
Who would have thought?
But it's reality, OUR reality.

Everyday we hear of deaths, infections and it looks like it won't end soon.

AND THEN WE SEE ON THE NEWS AND ON SOCIAL MEDIA THAT A SENATOR OF THE PHILIPPINES WAS FOUND COVID-19 POSITIVE!  And he went to Makati Medical Center to accompany his wife who is about the give birth.

Now, wait a minute - he knew he was a PUI YET he ESCAPED his quarantine and has endagered the LIVES of so many people and their families.


He was selfish.  I put myself in the shoes of his wife - then I realized, that I wouldn't want to compromise the safety of those around me.  Even if it's my first time to give birth - it's NOT A REASON to belittle all the rules and exempt yourself.  Yes, she needed support, she was afraid - but at this moment in time - who is not in need of support?  who is not afraid?  FREAKING EVERYON IS AFRAID!

I am angered more because I have an aunt who is in the hospital with no one to care for her!  She just lost her husband, her sons are in quarantine.  THERE IS NO ONE PHYSICALLY THERE FOR HER!  Yet the gal of this outrageous senator to go out, and possibly infect others.  Critical people, a HOSPITAL for that matter!  What kind of a human being is he?  Is he even a human being?

I am angered, very very angered!  It's rage really.  And I am using shouty CAPITALS just to make my point!

Everyone is suffering and sacrificing during this COVID-19 pandemic, not one souls is spared from this.  But there he goes.

The underlying conditions are DIABETES and HYPERTENSION.

An uncle of mine passed so suddenly.
He had diarrhea for 2 days.
The doctor gave him meds.
Then he had high fever.
They gave him meds.
He had a hard time breathing.
Hospital #1 turned them away.
Hospital #2 took him in.
He died that night.

He wasn't tested.
There was not time to test.
His death will not be included in the #Covid19 death statistic.
He had a history of diabetes and hypertension.

Deaths are under reported because some die before they even get tested.

Uncle L.  Rest in PEACE.  
You were the nicest uncle on your side of the family.
You were quiet but nice and polite and good hearted.

Gloria Maris has been a staple for birthdays and celebrations with the family.  I remember when my Panget and I were still dating, his parents would always choose to have dinner in Gloria Maris when they didn't want to think of a new place to go.  We know that food will be good and that everyone will enjoy it.

When they moved to it's current location in Greenhills, everyone expected it to be the same.  Well, the menu was upgraded, the price too - but the quality well, in my personal opinion it deteriorated.  Well, you see - when you upgrade the prices, people will expect the food to taste better right?  Well, that wasn't the case.

We found ourselves going to Gloria Maris less and less.  So when news that a new owner was coming in - well everyone was all on the edge.  I'm sure everyone was curious on what would happen.  Would the name be changed?  Will the menu change?  Will there be changes or will it just be maintained.  Everyone was excited to see what's in store.

Last week, we were invited to try the new dishes and old improved favorites.  And here's a photo roll of what we had.  I'm sure the pictures will be enough to entice you to go back to Glora Maris Greenhills:

Two Tone Almost Seafood Soup 
I don't remember Gloria Maris having this, but as I said I haven't visited in a long while.
This was a good introduction to our first meal at #TheNewGloriaMaris

The aroma was divine!  We were told to enjoy these shrimps with skin on.
And I did - and it was good!  I usually take the skin out, but this one was a good experience!

 Mini Taro Basket with Prawn Scallop
When I was younger, I didn't like taro.  I slowly tried it and I really liked this version simply because they serve it with a sauce on the side so it won't get very dry.  The shrimp and the scallops were really fresh and cooked very well.  I loved that the shrimp has a crisp bite to it, it wasn't overcooked!

Really good siomai.  Really good hakaw.  Really good egg tart with a buttery flaky crust.

Fried Lamb Chop with Mint Jelly 
I don't eat lamb, so I trusted my tablemates when they said this was really good.
It was tender and didn't have an aftertaste.

Perfect ratio of meat and fat.  Crisp to the bite and oh so wonderful with the mustard dressing!

Wonderful tender beef.  I was just too shy to ask for a bowl of white rice.

Steamed Live Oyster with Garlic 
This has got to be my FAVORITE dish served.  There were so many oohs and aahs when they placed the dish on the table.  It was love at first bite.  The huge pieces of oyster were cooked perfectly and it was not malansa at all.  The sauce was a dream, the flavors worked seamlessly with the steamed oyster.  Have a closer look at the image below.

#SundaySeries: Relationship with God

Having faith is something I feel is needed more than religion.  Religion will teach us that there is a higher being, but it's really up to us to start that relationship.

In school, we were taught prayers and good deeds in religion class.  When I was younger, I took the class for granted.  I didn't feel the need at that time to have a relationship with God.  As I grew older, I felt I needed it and started one.

I respect all kinds of religion.  I will never put down another for mine.  I respect people's faith and even admire them for their relationship with God.  Most religions have flaws, but I think the bottom line is that - when we start and continue on a relationship with God, then it should be personal.  We need not declare to the world that we are going to Church, or the ministry that we do.  The Lord sees all our efforts.

I firmly believe that our relationship with the Lord should be personal and private.  We ask for prayers because we too pray for others.  It all boils down to good deeds that we do.

Learning Mandarin, what method is best?

I studied in a sort of Chinese school for 13 years.
So that "sort of' means, I SHOULD know how to speak basic Mandarin right?


I studied in a Chinese school where we only get less than an hour of Chinese class daily.  When you think about it, well - one hour a day, should be okay - but the problem is, at that time - it was pure memorization.  The books that we used, were those traditional books that I honestly have no idea what is written in them.  I see Chinese characters and they're just that - Chinese characters without meaning, nothing.  It was not practical if you ask me.  The words we were taught were not used in everyday conversation

It was only during my 3rd or 4th year of high school that I realized how important knowing how to speak Chinese was.  It was during a trip to the Chinese border from Hong Kong that while I was going around the mall, I was having a hard time communicating with people who looked like me.  I was so frustrated that after that trip, I swore to myself that I would go to China and learn the language.  I owed it to myself.

So when an opportunity came, I went and I studied.  It was such a memorable half a year of my life that I wouldn't trade for anything.  I studied hard - the hardest I have studied in my life.  It was at that time that I really grew up and matured.  I was in a foreign country that spoke little english, I was without parents, there was no driver, no helpers to help me.  I was something I never thought I'd ever do.

At the start, everyday was a struggle to me.  I had to adjust what I learned for 13 years to a new system.  I did the work, I made worksheets, I bought books, I put in extra time learning the language.  We had quizzes, midterms and finals.  We even have a report card to show our progress.  All in all it was a half day meant for just learning the Chinese language.  It was that intense.  Imagine the hours you spend daily just to learn ONE language.  I had a class in comprehension, and then another class for listening.  They really chop it up so that foreigners can really learn the language.  But of course the best 'learning' was, you can get to practice it everyday since you are in China.  Everywhere you can see Chinese words and you hear people speaking in Chinese.  I was forced to adapt, to learn and to speak.  So by the end of my studying, I was already arguing with the locals in Chinese!

When I got back, it was an adjustment again - less Chinese words seen and spoken.  So what is the effect?  Well, many words forgotten.  My Chinese became kulang sa practice.

So what did I learn and realize during my half a year in Beijing? I realized:

  • -  Immersion is the best teacher.  Being in a place where people know little english, you will be forced to adapt, to learn and to do what is NECESSARY to survive.
  • -  The hours I spent learning the language was important.  Imagine 4-5 hours of learning just Chinese and spread that out 5 days a week for almost 6 months.
  • -  The lessons we were taught were brought down to a level of a child.  I felt this was the best strategy of Beijing Language and Culture University.  I was 22 at that time, and the lessons I learned were really basic - food, people, days of the week, directions, fruits, colors, places, animals.  They made grown adults learn very basic words that can be used in everyday life.  And from there they built a vocabulary that is added per lesson.  It seemed really funny and a but insulting - BUT man I can attest to it's effectivity.

When my kids started big school, I thought it would be easier.  I expected the school to teach them the basics and to make sure that they have a solid foundation on the basics.  I had this expectation that the school would have a better Chinese program compared to what I had during my time.  You can say that I expected the curriculum to evolve to a more modern effective technique.  To be honest, in my alma matter - my daughter had no problems with Chinese, she gets by with just studying by herself.  Because of how her grades are in Chinese, I assumed all is well.  But with Connor, my gosh - it was very different.

His lessons, were basic I guess.  They send out course outlines every quarter, and when you see the pages you'll be surprised on the load.  These are not just 2 pages worth, it's about 6 or more - back and forth.  I am no teacher, but I trusted the system enough because they should know best, right?  I would review Connor here and there when needed.

First and Second quarter were okay, his quiz results were satisfactory.  I was happy with them.  I think because they established simpler lessons.  But when I received the Third quarter report card, I was surprised with his grade.  Normally, I would just shrug it off.  But I was curious.  So I went to the PTC and met with his Chinese teacher.

I was very VERY surprised to learn that Grade 1 boys are expected to sight read Chinese words AND sentences.  They are expected to recognize words, re-arrange and correct erroneous sentences.  Mind you, Chinese word characters are not in the form of simple shapes.  I mean in all seriousness the words/characters look really foreign.  I was in shock, I think my mouth was gaping after meeting with the teacher and I think hours after that - I was in disbelief.

I was given these advice:

  1. -  Follow up and teach our sons at home (there is NO need for a tutor, but follow up is important.
  2. -  Practice writing
  3. - Try to interject Chinese words in everyday conversations

Here are my reactions to the advice:

  1. -  I expect my child to learn in school.  I expect the school to teach and equip him with the proper knowledge.  The school can give homework to follow up, but I don't think it's our duty as parents to follow up and teach our kids.  I remember the teacher telling me to 'help us' by reviewing our kids.  To be honest, I wanted to say - 'Bakit pa kami magbabayad ng tuition if kami rin magtuturo?' but I had to keep my cool.
  2. -  Practice writing is okay.  I would prefer that the school impose a Chinese writing homework everyday than blindly expecting the parents to do this activity voluntarily.  We parents WILL NOT voluntary do this because as I said - I personally expect the school to do this.  
  3. -  This I have to say is the funniest thing I have ever heard.  I am quite controlled with the words that I use, but to be honest - I have stronger words in my head, but I choose not to use them here.  Let's be honest.  Chinese is not a second language in the country.  We are learning this language to be competitive in the future.  We always say that Chinese/Mandarin will be beneficial in the future - but what is it without practice?  What is leaning 30 minutes a day without practice and immersion? Can you believe that our kids are learning three (3) different languages?  Three!  Not one, but three!

Thinking back, I asked myself - how did I learn the language at age 22?  How did I come to love and appreciate the language?  I had to think back and dig deep.  What method worked on me?  I know I am not a teacher, but what I have is EXPERIENCE.  I was a 22 year old equip with very little Chinese (Imagine my Chinese was the Taiwan style old characters), but I left the BLCU with so much new words, knowledge and appreciation of the language.  I HOPED that the method I was taught would be used by my high school because when they do, Chinese subject will not be something dreadful and will be enjoyable.

So what method was that?  IT WAS DUMBED DOWN for us adults.  Yes, it's as simple as that.  We were given lessons for young children and we were all grown adults in class!  You see what I mean?  There is NO SHAME in giving lessons that is not in the same level.  The school has to adapt and adjust to the capabilities of the kids.  Not because the books says Level 1 means that Grade 1 kids should learn that.  I personally feel that basics should be instilled and mastered.  And when they have REALLY masted that skill, then it's on to the next level.

I'm sure I would be questioned with how come for other subjects, it's different.  Of course it's different!  English is a language we are exposed to day in day out, 24/7 - we read english books, we watch and listen to english cartoons and TV shows, we speak english most of the time.  Filipino is the same way, we're more exposed to English and Filipino.  So how about Math, math is something we do repetitively - we gain skill because there is practice and we use it everyday.  How about SS?  Well, it's basic human behavior, right?  Most of them we use in our everyday lives.

So, what is my advice?  As a person who had to go to Beijing to learn the language.  I feel that the basics should be given first.  Personally, I think for the younger levels that they be taught the old Chinese Taiwan style alphabets.  This is to make the pronunciation better.  Fill up these young brains with vocabulary via listening - just like how we teach kids to talk.  No need to recognize words yet because let's face it - we don't want to confuse the kids with visuals.  Teach them all the colors, members of the family, parts of the body, food, fruits, animals, types of vehicles, school furnitures and fixtures - dumb it down!  When they've had enough of hearing all these words and can recognize it when they hear it - then you expose them to the sight words.  When they have masted the sight words, then you introduce the proper sentence construction and grammar.  Make it practical, so they can remember it and use it in everyday life.

But hey, this is just me.  I am not a teacher and what do I know right?  Hahaha..

What I know is 30 minutes a day is NOT ENOUGH to learn another language.

When I was a lot younger, I used to have this idea in my head that I need to take revenge on certain things.  That when people do something to me, I need to retaliate.  I was following the saying, if they hit you, you hit back.  I couldn't for the life of me (at that time) understand the Bible phrase to 'give your other cheek'  I swear, I thought it was so very wrong.

Then I experienced heartache.  I was feeling my lowest (I think) and then one day, I realized - that I needed to forgive that person and I needed to forgive myself.  It took a while, but then when I wished that person well and after that, everything was alright again.  The pain was minimal, I think I grew so much from that experience.  The lesson I learned then was to not think negatively of others, and instead wish them the best.

Let's not think ill of others, instead wish them well.  That's what I do now.  Whenever I'm irritared or angered by circumstances, I take a breath - say this in my head 'Lord, please take care of this' and after a while, I'll be calmer.

I wish I can instill in my children the act of forgiving and to accept apologies, no matter how early or how late.

Quaker Smart Heart Challenge

Would you believe that I never consumed oatmeal as a child?  Yep!  Oatmeal was never forced on us, I remember trying it and saying it doesn't have taste and that was it.  I only really ate oatmeal as an adult, a full blown adult.  And do you know the reason why?  It was because I was told that it was the healthier alternative and also because, well - my cholesterol level was slightly above the borderline.

I would put honey as a flavoring or strawberries, when it was in season.  I remember eating it for a few days and then that was it.  My Panget on the other hand ate it regularly - it's his breakfast every Monday.  He said this was to counter all the food that he eats over the weekend.

Be the light.
Be the salt.
Pay It Forward.

The animated priest who officiated the Mass I attended yesterday said to share our light to others.  What he said struck me and I found myself in tears.  I was asking for a sign, and it was during his Homily that I found the answer.

Be a gift to others.  Share your light.  Pay it forward.

And so I will pay it forward.  I will share my light.  I will try and be a gift to others.

I thanked the priest after Mass.  I told him that I was asking for a sign and that his Homily was the answer.  He hugged me and said 'You're going to be OK'.

Cooking Quest with #HeinzAsianSauces: Chicken in Claypot

Cooking is something that I like to do.  If I only had so much time on my hands, I would cook everyday.  My kids like my cooking (I'm so glad they do!) and it really warms the heart when they tell me that what I made them is good!  But I'm a creature of habit, so I tend to make the same dishes over and over again with some tweaks here and there.  Good thing though, that my kids are kinda like me.  Haha!  So once in a while, they will ask me to cook 'that' chicken dish.  Problem is, which chicken dish!  Hahaha..  So I went Asian this time.

I don't usually follow a recipe when I cook fast meals.  I just look at what I have and just wing it.  No definite measurement, most of the time - I just do it by taste and by mood.  I'll make a list of ingredients at the end of the post, so you'll have an idea.  Hehehe..  Recently, I was given #HeinzAsianSauces to try and I decided to cook with it last weekend.

I find chicken dishes very forgiving, so it's usually my go to 'meat' to cook with, plus my children love chicken more than pork.  My chicken part of choice is always thighs and thigh fillets, they're more juicy and easy to cook.  For this meal, I wanted it to be easy - so I decided, a rice topping of sort.

So I cut up the 5 pieces of chicken thigh fillets into cubes - there is no definite size as long as it's bite size.  I drizzle some corn starch on it (my mom taught me that cornstarch makes the chicken 'softer') season with a little salt, white pepper and add some #HeinzGoldenMarkSoySauce.  I mix them very well and set it aside.  I then sliced a medium onion (the size may vary depending on your taste, we like onions, so a medium size is perfect), you may slice it whatever way - but I suggest to dice it so it'll blend in the dish.  

Saute your onions until fragrant and then toss the chicken and saute until cooked.  Please do a taste test because I had to add more soy sauce and a bit of the #HeinzBlendedSesameOil.  Toss and mix very well so the flavors will be infused.  Then lastly, add about 4 to 5 cloves of pounded garlic to the mixture and stir fry until fragrant.

To serve, I chose to serve it on a claypot - para may presentation.  Hahaha!!  So place cooked white rice in the claypot, put the cooked chicken on top of the rice.  Place the claypot on the stove on high heat and wait till you hear crackling.  When you hear crackling - turn off the fire and carefully take the claypot off the stove and serve as is.

5 pieces (or more) of Chicken Thigh Fillets (cubed into bite sizes)
Cooking Oil
Onion (diced)
Garlic (pounded)
Heinz Golden Mark Soy Sauce
Salt and Pepper to taste
Heinz Blended Sesame Oil
White Rice and a claypot

I am not staring at the screen thinking of what I should write.  I was planning to write about my son's chinese lessons in school, a cooking post using #HeinzAsianSauces, and something about being grateful of what we all have right now.

Yesterday, I woke up to the news of Kobe Bryant's death.  He was with his 13 year old daughter, Gigi.  It's sad news really - and it made me and so many of us realize that life is really short.  I took for granted the blessing that my Panget and my kids get to go home safe.  I saw one IG post of my IG friend - it says

Just last week, I witnessed two motorcycle accidents.  It made me realize that so much can happen in an instant.  After seeing those accidents, I said a little prayer and thanked God for keeping me safe.  Everyday, I pray for the safety of my friends and loved ones.  Now, I'm starting to say to keep everyone safe in the world.

Currently, the world is facing a panic on the Wuhan Coronavirus.  So many news here and there and social media is adding to the fear with hysteria because of fake news.  We can only be vigilant and be socially responsible citizens by sharing factual news and by discerning if we should share it or not.  Being socially responsible is not only for our online lives - in real life, we should also be responsible enough not to bring our kids to school when they are really sick.  We should also wear masks for our safety and the safety of others.

Bottoml ine is - let us appreciate all that we have and be thankful for them - EVERY SINGLE DAY.  Love more and forgive more.  I remember Pope Francis' message - MERCY and COMPASSION.

One recent Sunday, during a supermarket run - I noticed something new - I saw that there was a full range of asian sauces of the brand HEINZ.  I was curious because I knew Heinz was a brand of ketchup.  I took a look, read the label and thought, maybe on my next supermarket run, I'd try one of the sauces.

Weeks late, I received an invite to their launch!  I was really excited because I'm sure to be able to see and taste the full range, right?  Here the are:

I have long searched for a Light Soy Sauce, but somehow couldn't find one in a local grocery.  I knew it was available in Asian stores, but I didn't want to make the effort to go to one just to buy a bottle.  I'm happy that Heinz has their own Light Soy Sauce, I'm most excited to use this!!

I promise to make a follow up post on what I'va made using the sauces as I really trust the brand Heinz.  I grew up having Heinz ketchup around, and even my kids know the brand!  So imagine my delight that they can recall the brand, I was very happy to show them that a brand they also love now serves asian sauces!  Cool, right?
