Lugang Cafe - FINALLY!

Tuesday, December 28, 2010

Been hearing about this new Chinese restaurant along Connecticut Street in Greenhills.  Many say that their Xiao Long Bao is the best in Manila.  We've been wanting to try it out for a while, but it was just last Sunday that we got the chance!  Thank goodness, my mom and aunt arrived early for the walk-in!!

The place was PACKED, I mean literally PACKED!  There were so many people waiting for tables to open up!  There's this word in Mandarin that I always associate with Chinese restaurants - RE NAO (hot and noisy) and it was really like that!

Here are the dishes that we got:

The food is good, I mean for a Chinese restaurant - the dishes were served hot and fresh.  The Xiao Long Baos were just so-so for me.  I mean come on, if your benchmark are those of Din Tai Fung, well - they're incomparable.  BUT in fairness, Lugang has the BEST xiao long bao, IN Manila.  Since there's no DTF here, Lugang's can be considered the BEST in town.  We downed two orders in a flash - I was too slow to take pics!

My overall experience was very satisfactory, I'd love to go back and try other dishes!  But for sure, I will be ordering the xiao long baos again!

The OTHER SIDE of Mercato Centrale @ BGC

Friday, December 24, 2010

For the past four Sundays, I have been in Mercato Centrale @ BGC, but what made the last Sunday extra special was that I was one of their concessionaires.  I belonged to the other side of Mercato Centrale.

I remember asking one of the concessionaires during my first visit, what time the ingress was - since it was an early weekend market.  I was told that it started at 4:00 in the morning.  I was shocked and impressed, but then it dawned on me that that was the normal call time for mall ingress, right?  So it was just but normal.

On my fourth Sunday - I found myself manning a booth with my sister in law selling gingerbread trees!  We got to Mercato at about 5:00am - I think we were the first ones who were setting up at Tent 1, we looked very eager since we were really early!  Hahaha..  But since it was our first time, I thought - why not go early to see what we can do.  We honestly did not have any idea on what the tables looked like or where we could place the rack that we brought along.  But we managed to fix our booth nicely, I think our early call time worked as we didn't look harassed and panicky while setting up.  We were able to take our time and decided on how we wanted the booth to look.  We were actually done setting up before the market opened its doors.

By 6:00 in the morning - most concessionaires were still not set up, but we already were.  My SIL and I were ready - we were actually wondering what time the other booths will be set-up.  Most booths were set up by 8am.  I think those who set up at 8am were already used to the fact that no one shows up at

We had our first customer at around 8am - a mother and a daughter.  They bought two trees because the daughter thought it looked really cute!  She didn't know who to give it to, but she thought it was really cute!  Our sales was surprisingly slow for the few hours after that - it started to pick-up towards lunch time.  People were all smiling and saying 'thank you' whenever we offer them free samples to taste, some took a taste while some declined saying they were still full.

Being on the other side of Mercato and selling/sampling goods is not as easy as it looks.  One has to be friendly, smiley and cheery!  I had to change my lines a couple of times to see what worked!  I started out with the following lines:
  • 'Please try our gingerbreads!'  This line just got me smiles and curious looks on the products that we wee selling
  • 'Gingerbreads for sale!'  This got me nowhere
  • 'Free taste!  Gingerbreads!'  This I think was one of the most effective - when they hear the word free, they turn their heads!
  • 'Free taste!  Try our gingerbreads!'  Another effective line that got people to try and buy some trees!

I think I used the last two lines the most!  I was seated inside the booth the whole time, since I'm pregnant I easily get tired when I am on my feet, good thing my sister in law and her staff were on their feet selling out products to people!  I was the resident order taker and the cashier (love being the cashier!!)  Even if I was seated the whole time, I never got tired of uttering the lines and encouraging people to try our product!  One tactic I used was to entice a child to try the gingerbread - I then ask if the like it, and when they do - I tell them to ask mommy and daddy to buy for them.  This tactic worked like magic!  The parents couldn't resist buying for their kids - and when my SIL tells them that the gingerbread trees are all natural and do not carry any kind of preservatives - the parents are more eager to buy them for their kids!  I was actually impressed that the kids loved the gingerbreads - I never thought that kids would appreciate the taste of it, but I'm super glad that they do!!

At the close of the market, my SIL and I were able to sell all of the gingerbread trees that we brought with us.  And I think that's very successful - because we didn't get to bring any gingerbread home with us!  You see, my SIL was skeptical at first that we'd make good sales, me on the otherhand was the complete opposite!  I knew for a fact that any number we'd bring, we'd be able to sell out - for me, it was just a matter of time.  And I was right all along!  Had we brought more trees, I think we still could have sold more BUT to be honest, we'd never know because we didn't bring any extra!

Selling with my SIL made me realize that we could do business together.  I had so much fun manning the booth with her.  I wish that my condition was a little bit better and different because I think that I could have been more comfortable selling trees outside the booth rather than being stuck inside the booth.  But no regrets, no regrets at all!! :)

The performance of our booth made us both realize that we could do this regularly - because there's a market.  We'd love to join Mercato Centrale next year!

Thank you Anton, Rache, RJ, and Mommy Mundo for opening the door ajar for us.  Thank you for giving us the opportunity to join Mercarto on the last Sunday of 2010.

Happy Holidays!! :)

P.S.  We were so busy that we failed to take pics of our booth!!  To those who took shots of our booth, we hope you can share with us your photos!!  Thank you in advance!! :)

Raising Hope

Wednesday, December 15, 2010

Mindy told me about this show - I've been wanting to watch it but as you know, I do not know how to download!  Hahaha!  I rely on my Panget or my twin to do it for me.  And so yesterday, my twin told me that he has 10 episodes of Raising Hope.

Last night - I saw 4 episodes and I found the show really quirky and funny.  Princess Beyonce/Hope is really really cute and I like the 'innocence/naive-ness/dumbness' of the characters!  Its just so funny to watch..

My favorite part was when Virginia and Burt were singing to Hope (Danny's Song by Kenny Loggins)  This scene made me teary eyed (prengnancy hormones!)

Looking forward to more episodes of laughter!!

Yes, I am stressed - with my ballpen addiction!

You see, there's this pen that I have - its called the Jetstream 2&1.  It has two pens, one black and one red - it also has a mechanical pencil built in.  My friend Kym bought it for me years ago upon my request, she bought it with instructions to buy refills.  And just last week, my refills officially ran out.  My black pen is no longer usable, as the ink has already been used up!

Image grabbed from THIS site

Since last week, I've been a little bothered.  I know it sounds silly BUT I'm that type of person.  I am very OC when it comes to my ballpens, so there - since my black in has ran out, I kept on thinking where and how I can get a hold of a new refill!

I asked my friend Kath who went to Hong Kong last week, but her schedule was full already.  Yesterday afternoon, I asked my BFF Kim - but I never got a reply, I think she turns off her phone when abroad.  I have another friend who's based in Singapore (he's also a ballpen enthusiast) - I am sending him the image of the pen and what the refill looks like so he can try and purchase for me.  On a last resort, I called the local distributor of Uni ballpens.  I spoke to a very nice lady and she said that there's a minimum order if I really wanted one - which was about 500+ pieces!  I have to admit, this sounded really tempting - BUT its not practical at all.

I am really stressing out!  Hahahaha... Silly noh?

DIDI'scoveries: Mercato Central @ BGC

Tuesday, December 07, 2010

Two Sundays ago was my first time at Mercato Centrale @ BGC.  We bumped into a HS kabarkada K, she told us to invite the rest of the gang to have lunch the following Sunday.  And yesterday, we did meet - but since there was no place to sit, we headed to walking distance Serendra for a late lunch.

While waiting for the rest of the gang to arrive, we walked the tents - discovered that the lay-out was different from the previous week!  I am not sure if it was just me, but I think there were new concessionaires around.  Here are the things that we bought:

Grandma's Cornflake Cookies

I like my cookies chewy.  Most of the cookies being sold during this time of the year are all crispy and crunchy.  Unfortunately, I am not fond of them - and so when I heard the words 'Try our chewy cookies!'  Boom, I was intrigued!  I got a sample and my, was it perfectly chewy!  I asked my Panget to try it and he said it was good.  Being an impulsive food buyer at bazaars, I thought to be more careful this time.  I made sure to remember where the booth was located because I had a feeling that my Panget will be back.  And just after a few minutes - we were, we bought a pack of a dozen cookies which cost P130.00.  The nice people selling them told us to leave the lid open if we wanted chewy cookies, and to keep the lid closed if we wanted crunchy ones.

Chorizo Bilbao

We bought a pack during our first visit.  My Panget loved it so much that we had to buy another pack.  This time, we got the spicy one.

Lasang Langit

My mom loves breads and I think I got it from her my fascination with breads.  There was this really nice and cheery guy who asked me to try their cheese bread.  And since I am a sucker for breads - I tried it out.  And the cheese bread tasted so good!  He then said that one long piece is only P100.00!  Okay, when I heard that it was only P100.00 - I was instantly sold!  But then he told me 'We're sold out of the Cheese bread na..'  Darnit!  But wait - I had to ask, if they had any piece left!  And luckily for me, they did!  Talk about meant to be!  I got the last piece of the cheese bread!  I had it this morning for breakfast and it was so yummy that I consumed almost half of the loaf!  Hahaha...

Manang's Chicken

While wading through the cooked food stalls, I saw this red sign that said Manang's, it has a tag line at the table that said 'Like Bonchon's, try Manangs!'  I was actually laughing because, I thought it was such a great idea!  I mean, I haven't tried Bonchon's yet but I knew the concept behind it - the 'double fried' fried chicken.  Then suddenly, I heard my name called out!  It was my friend Ivy from Bikram Yoga!  It was such a delight to see her, I think the last time I saw her was during my wedding last year!  Hahaha..  As it turns out - the booth is manned by her cousin - and it was their first weekend that day.  Ivy let me try her chicken wings and my gosh - was it goooooood.  The chicken was very crispy and the sauce, it was heavenly!  I couldn't describe the taste, basta it was really good!  If my friend and I just found seats - we would have ordered so much chicken!  It took me a while to decide to buy one, but when I got to doing it (I was really hungry!) they ran out of chicken wings, I settled for the chicken legs which cost P50.00 each, but they were much much bigger!  I actually ate a piece inside The Stock Market - where we had lunch!  Hahaha..

Delimondo's Corned Beef

My friend Kath was the one who told me about this.  She said that it was the best corned beef ever!  And that if there was a chance that Delimondo was in Mercato - I'd have to buy myself a can or more!  And when I saw the booth - I immediately told my Panget that I had to buy a can, just to try it out!  I was hoping to buy the smaller can, unfortunately - there's a new packaging - a bigger can that's just P15.00 more expensive.  So I bought one, we have yet to try this can.  I'll post when we do.

Mercato Centrale is such a fun place to go to if you're looking for foodie finds and if you're not watching your weight!  Considering that I've been there two weeks in a row, I don't think I've seen everything yet.  I have this yearning every Sunday to visit - call me crazy, but I enjoy walking through the tents of Mercato Centrale - there's certain pull that I can't explain.  My Panget told me last night 'Don't tell me next week, Mercato tayo ulit'  I just had to smile - and he knows what that means.  Hahaha!! :)

Mercato Centrale at BGC

Tuesday, November 30, 2010

I first learned of Mercato Central from the tweets of RJ Ledesma and Anton Diaz.  I honestly, did not know what it was about.  When I read a tweet about it, that it was a weekend market that was open from 7am until 4pm, I was curious!  I immediately told my Panget about it, and he said that he wanted to drop by and see what it was.

Later that night, I saw in the news that Mercato Centrale was air-conditioned!  Waaaaay cool!!  I mean, I've been to a couple of weekend markets and when I start walking through the stalls, I'd be perspiring like crazy!  I knew to always bring a fan with me, but it wasn't enough.

Last Saturday night, my Panget told me that he'll think about going to Mercato Centrale the next day.  But before he could tell me, I fell asleep already.  I actually woke up early the next day, but since I didn't get any signal from my Panget that he wanted to visit Mercato - I thought to myself 'you can go back to sleep'.  But after a while, I heard an alarm - I immediately dismissed it, and then suddenly - something jumped on the bed, with a matching poke in the arm and a whispher 'Let's go! Let's go!'  Greaaaaaat - now I have to wake up.  It was actually odd - that my Panget gets up ahead of me on a Sunday.  Sunday is usually his 'catch up on sleep day' where he wakes up at 12noon.  So it was quite refreshing to see him up and about.

When we got there, everything was in full swing already.  People were everywhere but it wasn't as crowded.  The lay-out of the booths were nicely done - it was very organized, the paths for walking were wide enough so as to avoid crowding in certain areas.  Concessionaires were very generous in offering their goodies to passers-by.  This I have to admit is really nice, I mean it was like the UTT (Ultimate Taste Test) all over again!  They were offering food and drinks left and right, I was actually a bit hesitant to take in samples because I knew I wouldn't be buying them.

My first try that morning was bagoong.  It was actually shoved in front of me with a line 'Try this different kind of bagoong'  so I took it - and my gosh was it fan-tastic!  The bagoong was really smooth, no lumps - nothing, but it tasted so heavenly!  In a matter of seconds, I bought a small jar.  Hahaha!!  I remember during one of Anton's Ultimate Taste Test, I fell in love with a homemade bagoong called Patrick's Bagoong.  And now this!  I think I may have a fascination with bagoongs.  Maybe because I'm pregnant?  Maybe, right?

I've posted it in my blog - that my Panget and I have this love affair with hotdogs and sausages, and so when my Panget saw a booth selling chorizos and longanisa, he was immediately taken by the selection and started trying the varieties!  We ended up buying a pack of the Chorizo Bilbao!  The lady selling them was really nice and accommodating - she was the one suggesting what we should be getting, and mind you - I think we took about 15 minutes in deciding which to get!  Yesterday during lunch, he couldn't resist to ask for a piece to be cooked.  And it was really good.

Next up was the Beef Tapa.  Anton actually told us to try the snails that they were serving, but my Panget gathered that it was too early for snails!  Hahaha..  So we ended up just sampling the beef tapa.  And since I had a grocey list on my bag that included 'tapa' - I immediately told Panget that we could purchase one, for his breakfast.  And we did.  He just had it this morning and says that it was good.

I had so much fun walking in and out of the tents.  The fact that the tents were air-conditioned made the walk and trip less tiring.  I was finally able to meet and introduce myself to twitter friend RJ Ledesma! :) Oh!  He was telling us to try this mochi from Tagaytay, and we did - we bought one (Green Tea mochi) when we were on our way out.  And it was soooooo refreshing!  It was actually the perfect ending to visiting Mercato Centrale!

I will surely go back next week and the weeks after that too!  I'd be going earlier, as there were stalls that were already empty when we got there by 10:00am.

There were also celebrity sightings - Marc Nelson, Rovilson Fernandez, Anne Curtis, Mylene Dizon, Rowell Santiago and Agot Isidro.  If there were more - I didn't get a chance to see them!  Also, may I just say that I enjoyed the man band, the one with the tiny guitar?  I found it funny and nice to hear them sing 'Always' - reminded me of the UMD dancers..  Hahahaha!! :)

Congratulations to the organizers (Anton, Rache, RJ, Mommy Mondo) you guys did VERY well.  BRAVO! :)

My kawawang Beef Pepper Rice

Friday, November 26, 2010

Last Sunday, my Panget and I had a very late merienda slash super early dinner at Pepper Lunch in Rockwell.  It was my choice because I have been craving for Pepper Lunch since three months ago!

So I was really excited to finally have my Beef Pepper Rice!

My excitement dropped and I was really disappointed because this was what was served me:

It looked like my Beef Pepper Rice was nalugi :(  It had just a few beef on it!  I remember those Beef Pepper Rice I've had in the past vividly and they had more than enough beef on them - this one looked super kawawa, thus - I dubbed it My kawawang Beef Pepper Rice.

My Panget's order of the Beef Terriyaki had a LOT of beef on it.  I was so sad.

I hope that on my next visit - it won't be another 'My kawawang Beef Pepper Rice' again..

The Battle of the Milk Tea

I am a Serenitea loyalist and addict.  I have to admit that.

But last Monday - while nearing Serenitea Banawe, I noticed that there were a LOT of cars.  This prompted me to drive away and go to nearby Funtea.  It was my first time there - I've been passing by it numerous time - but never got the chance to try it yet.  You see, I'm the type of person who likes going back to the same place and ordering the same thing - every time.  So making this trip - was a little hard for me.  Hahaha!!

When I entered Funtea - I was greeted with smiling faces of the owners.  I immediately asked for their bestseller - and sure enough, it was their Milk Tea.  I ordered two large ones with pearls and my request was that there be no ice put in it.  I didn't mind that I wasn't asked for the sugar level and I love sweet things!  I remembered my recent trips to Hong Kong that my Panget and I would have Milk Tea every single day - it was because the Milk Tea places were everywhere - I mean, literally everywhere.

The service was really fast and I was impressed!  I was really excited to go home and try it.  But then, there was this urge to go back to Serenitea and order what I usually take - the Okinawa Milk Tea.

So, I headed over there - and sure enough, there was parking already.  When I got there - I was second in line - I ordered the Okinawa, my Panget told me to get him something new, so I got him the Malt Assam Milk Tea and for a change, I tried a hot Roasted Milk Tea.  The cold Milk Teas I always request 'No Ice' because I want to taste the full flavor of the milk teas, the ice for me makes it cold - yes, but the taste is diminished when the ice melts.

As usual - the wait was longer.  I really find it odd that it takes them a while to prepare the milk teas - considering that they're very well staffed!  I had to wait about 30 minutes for my drinks to arrive.  My drinks were actually done BUT they failed to call out my number.  I had to go to the counter to follow-up the drinks, and they have been standing there.  Hmm.. It was only then that I noticed that the large cup wasn't full.  I don't know why, but for my previous orders - the cups were really full even if I requested 'No Ice'.

When I got home - I took pictures to compare.

I really don't know why with this order, Serenitea's milk tea wasn't filled full.

I'm sorry, but I'm very anal with these things, here's another look:

As for the taste, Funtea's was not bad.  The sweetness level is okay for me, it wasn't too sweet.  The taste was good - like that of Hong Kong's milk tea.  I honestly prefer Okinawa, because it's my favorite.  So I'm a little biased.  But I was really disappointed with the milk tea not being filled full.  I mean, sorry - but what was that about?  I felt tuloy that I was cheated.  Hmmm...

I have to stay - the Malt Milk Tea was really good - now, that's something new to order!  Hehehe...

HOLIDAY ALERT: November 16, 2010!

Wednesday, November 10, 2010

Here's a look at the proclamation!!

I dunno whether to rejoice or not.  Hahaha!!

Purple Oven's Grandma's Chocolate Cake

Since getting pregnant, my taste buds have been wonky.

There's this constant urge - to eat a chocolate cake!  And you know very well that - I do not like chocolates!  Hahaha..

My first attempt was futile - because I threw it all up.

But the second attempt which was last Saturday with Mindy, was successful!  I got a slice of Polly's Brown Derby and it was fantastic!! :)  Yummmmmm......

And so I thought, maybe - I can eat chocolate now.  My good friend Kath who's also pregnant, was also semi-craving for some chocolate cake last weekend.  She told me she wanted to order Purple Oven's choco cake, and suggested we take half each - good idea, as I don't think I'll ever get to finish one whole cake!

This morning, my half arrived!

 Purple Oven's Grandma's Chocolate Cake

Everyone who knows me would say that the sight of a chocolate cake is not at all appealing to me.  So this particular chocolate cake is just the same.  When I saw the chocolate shavings - it didn't look as good.  Hahaha!!  But I had to taste it, I mean - I bought half right?  So, I cut a slice - and the verdict?  for a person who doesn't fancy chocolate - the cake was pretty good!  One thing I didn't like, which I'm sure everyone would love are the choco chips embedded on the cake!   But nevertheless, the cake was pretty good, I liked the fact that it didn't taste too chocolate-y.

A close look on the cake..

But still, my chocolate cake of choice has still go to be Polly's Brown Derby.   I don't know why - maybe because it was the first chocolate cake that I liked?  And maybe because the icing was mocha?  Hmmm... Maybe!

Modern Family

Monday, November 08, 2010

I just received my prize last Saturday from Mindy - and when I got home, I immediately watched the last 11 episodes!  I love the humor of the show - I appreciate each and every one of the characters!  Sofia Vergara is hot and soooooo funny!!

Mindy was nice enough to share episodes of the current season - and last night, I saw the halloween episode.  I have to say, I was laughing so hard at this certain part of the show.

It was about Gloria's accent.

I couldn't stop laughing.

Baby Cheeses  (Imagine this being said by Gloria)

Look at what Jay has on his hands..

It was hilarious.  Ask my Panget how hard I was laughing.

The Walking Dead

Thursday, November 04, 2010

Just like Mindy - I am scared SHIT of Zombies.

My Panget has this fascination of the living dead.  He has sooooo many zombie movies on our Popcorn Hour.  Same question as Mindy - What's with men and Zombies?

Anyhoo, I've been seeing glimpses of The Walking Dead on Fox.  I thought it was an old show - apparently, it's a new one!  And just before dinner, my Panget told me with a huge smile on his face 'I've downloaded The Walking Dead'.  This is what I have been dreading to hear.  Shit.

And so... we watched.

Man, was I covering my eyes most of the time.  Hahaha!!!

But seriously, the show has promise..

I can't believe I just said that. Hahahaha!!
